WHO WE SERVE

Supporting local families & farmers

Small & Diversified Farmers

We provide educational programming, coaching and technical assistance to growers and work cooperatively with them to develop new market opportunities that match existing capacity.

Health Centers & Related Organizations

We collaborate with federally-qualified health centers, school-based clinics, and regional health systems to connect patients of Prescription for Health and Produce Prescription programs to healthier food options.

We contribute to county and multi-county stakeholder groups to increase awareness about food and farming in the region and collaborate to address food access, food insecurity, and related health needs.

Direct to Consumer Markets

We manage Senior Fresh Pop-Up Markets and expand the use of purchasing incentives, including SNAP, Produce Connection, Senior Project Fresh and Double Up Food Bucks in our rural communities.

Local Food Leaders

We identify and support emerging leaders who can contribute to a robust, equitable and sustainable   food system. We endeavor to bring valuable resources to the region to build local capacity.

Institutional Purchasing

We assist school districts and in-home daycare centers in accessing fresh, affordable locally grown food, Farm to School curriculum materials and other education-related activities. We help schools access and navigate the 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan Farms & Kids program.

Regional & Statewide Involvement

Our mutually agreeable county and regional goals are aligned with the Michigan Good Food Charter.

WHAT WE DO

We partner with local farms

We are cultivating a vibrant and healthy food system rooted in local and regional food and farming.  The Northeast Michigan Healthy Food Initiative supports health and rural economic development by expanding markets for locally grown food, building small farm capacity, removing barriers to healthy food access, and building awareness of policy issues that contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of all residents of Michigan’s sunrise side.
