Healthy people, thriving rural economies, and resilient communities in Northeast Michigan
WHAT WE DO
We are cultivating a vibrant and healthy food system rooted in local and regional food and farming.
The Northeast Michigan Healthy Food Initiative supports health and rural economic development by expanding markets for locally grown food, building small farm capacity, removing barriers to healthy food access, and building awareness of policy issues that contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of all residents of Michigan’s sunrise side.

Who we serve
Small & Diversified Farmers
We help farms address risk and build capacity through technical assistance, educational programming and coaching and we work cooperatively to connect them to market opportunities that fit their needs.
Commission on Aging & Senior Centers
We help seniors get better access to healthy food at an affordable price. Through our season pop-up markets and purchasing incentives, we bring the food closer to them and make it fresh, local, and affordable
Schools & ECEs
We help schools and early childcare facilities source and provide healthier and locally grown food to children, access resources, and lead a NEMI regional farm to school network.
Health Centers & Related Organizations
We collaborate with federally-qualified health centers, school-based clinics, and regional health systems to connect patients of Prescription for Health and Produce Prescription programs to healthier food options.
